Beginner Microsoft Excel Syllabus

(2 days) If you have very little experience using Microsoft Excel, or even no experience at all, our Beginner Excel syllabus is the perfect place to start your Excel journey. This syllabus covers the most important parts of Excel to help you become comfortable using Excel for typical data collection and manipulation. The Beginner syllabus also provides a solid base to become more skilled in Excel with our Intermediate syllabus.

Learning Goals

Participants will be able to:

  1. Understand what spreadsheets are and what they are used for.
  2. Navigate the default MS Excel interface including the Ribbon, Tabs and Commands.
  3. Create new Workbooks and Worksheets.
  4. Enter data into Worksheets.
  5. Understand what Cell References are.
  6. Apply Cell Formatting to change how a cell looks.
  7. Use appropriate Number Formatting to change how the data in a cell looks.
  8. Create formulas to perform mathematical calculations in Excel.
  9. Locate and insert Excel Functions including using Function Arguments.
  10. Understand and use Autosum functions - SUM(), AVERAGE(), COUNT(), MAX(), MIN().
  11. Understand and use Text functions – UPPER(), LOWER(), LEN(), PROPER(), TRIM(), LEFT(), RIGHT(), MID(), CONCATENATE() / CONCAT(), COUNTA().
  12. Understand and use Mathematical functions – ROUNDUP(), ROUNDDOWN(), ROUND(), CEILING(), FLOOR(), MROUND().
  13. Use the Fill Handle to extend data series (including creating custom data series).
  14. Use the Paste Special command.
  15. Insert and manipulate Images in their spreadsheet.
  16. Use the different options for printing their spreadsheet.
  17. Understand the different types of file formats available for spreadsheets.
  18. Understand good practices when collecting data.

Prerequisites

Participants are expected to meet the following requirements with regards to using computers:

  1. know how to switch on and shut down a PC.
  2. comfortable using a Windows PC with common hardware including a keyboard, monitor, mouse and USB ports.
  3. know how to use Windows to launch applications, navigate directory structure and search for files.
