Intermediate Microsoft Excel Syllabus

(2 days) Our Intermediate Excel syllabus will take your Excel skills further by teaching you powerful features including Lookup functions, PivotTables and Macros. You will learn more efficient ways for data collection and management while also be introduced to features for data analysis.

  • Use Excel’s built-in commands to help navigate worksheets with many rows and/or columns.
  • Sort data on one or more columns including according to a custom order.
  • Filter data on one or more columns that meet specific criteria.
  • Understand and use specific filters made available based on column data.
  • Understand the difference between Relative and Absolute Cell References and when to use each one.
  • Understand and use Lookup functions - VLOOKUP(), HLOOKUP().
  • Understand the basics of Logic and how it applies to Excel.
  • Understand and use Logical functions - IF(), OR(), AND().
  • Use Tables and their unique feature to aid in data collection.
  • Build and format charts from data.
  • Understand what PivotTables are used for.
  • Build basic PivotTables and PivotCharts from data.
  • Use PivotTable Filters, Slicers and Timelines to filter data.
  • Understand and use Macros.
  • Use Excel’s features to protect the data in their spreadsheet.
  • 16. Copy data between MS Excel and MS Word.

Prerequisites

Participants are expected to meet the following requirements with regards to using computers:

  • know how to switch on and shut down a PC.
  • comfortable using a Windows PC with common hardware including a keyboard, monitor, mouse and USB ports.
  • know how to use Windows to launch applications, navigate directory structure and search for files.

Participants should also demonstrate competence with the following topics from the Beginner Syllabus:

  • Understand what spreadsheets are and what they are used for.
  • Navigate the default MS Excel interface including the Ribbon, Tabs and Commands.
  • Create new Workbooks and Worksheets.
  • Enter data into Worksheets.
  • Understand what Cell References are.
  • Apply Cell Formatting and Number Formatting
  • Create formulas to perform mathematical calculations in Excel.
  • Locate and insert Excel Functions including using Function Arguments.
  • Understand and use Autosum functions - SUM(), AVERAGE(), COUNT(), MAX(), MIN().
